The G-Class ventures into the future: with the new G 580 with EQ Technology, Mercedes-Benz presents the first fully electric version of its off-road icon. Product Manager Toni Mäntele presents the vehicle highlights in a walkaround.

Another strong feature of the new G 580 with EQ Technology is the optional elegant rectangular design box on the rear door. Items such as charging cables, tools or tyre chains for snow can be easily stowed in it.

The electric version is also characterised by a slightly raised bonnet and air curtains in the rear wheel arches. Both not only contribute to the powerful appearance of the electric G-Class, but also ensure optimised aerodynamics.

The new South Sea Blue magno colour is available exclusively for the new electric G-Class.

There are also numerous blue details on the vehicle. For example, the special model has blue brake callipers at the front and rear. There are also aerodynamically optimised 20-inch rims in black, black door handles with the G logo and a blue stripe in the bumper protection strip. The interior features nappa leather in the new silverpearl/black colour. The blue details of the EDITION ONE exterior are also reflected in the interior with the exclusive carbon fibre parts in blue and the tekki blue stitching. The new design box for transporting the load accessories is located on the rear door. Those who do not want to do without the classic spare wheel can also have it fitted as an option on the all-electric version.

MBUX features

Everything in view.

The MBUX infotainment system in the new G 580 with EQ Technology is also equipped with independent functions. For example, the EQ screen displays useful information on range, energy flow and more. And the navigation system with Electric Intelligence calculates the energy requirements for the planned route, considering the topography, route, heating and cooling requirements and charging stations along the route.

In the new G 580 with EQ Technology, four individually controlled electric motors close to the wheels provide propulsion. The battery integrated in the ladder frame ensures a low centre of gravity. The G-Class' local mountain in Graz can be conquered more than 13 times on a single charge. This corresponds to an altitude of 9,400 metres and is therefore higher than that of Mt Everest. Charging takes place with up to 11 kW at the wallbox at home or a DC charger with up to 200 kW.

Each of the four electric motors has its own switchable LOW RANGE gearbox. This allows for unique driving characteristics. The new G 580 with EQ Technology also sets the highest standards with its off-road capabilities: it has a gradeability of up to 100% on suitable surfaces and is stable on slopes of up to 35°. The maximum fording depth is 850 millimetres — even higher than the conventionally powered variants. The LOW RANGE off-road gear also has a reduction ratio to increase the drive torque. And, of course, the new electric G-Class is also equipped with differential locks. In contrast to the conventionally powered variants, however, virtual rather than mechanical locks are used. This is made possible by so-called torque vectoring: it ensures that the torque gets to where it is needed within fractions of a second. In addition, the new G 580 with EQ Technology has exclusive functions that are made possible by its innovative drive concept.

Rotation

G-TURN.*

The G-TURN allows the vehicle to turn on the spot on loose ground. The four independently driven wheels can rotate the vehicle to the left or right. Two complete vehicle rotations can be performed in one go. The feature is only available in the “Rock” driving programme and in LOW RANGE off-road gear.

*It is not permissible to use G-TURN and G-STEERING on public roads. Use G-TURN and G-STEERING only on loose or soft surfaces, e.g. gravel or snow.

Smaller turning circle

G-STEERING.*

G-STEERING ensures a significantly smaller turning circle when driving off-road or on loose, unpaved surfaces. This is possible thanks to targeted drive torque control of the individual drive wheels. The manoeuvring that may be necessary for a driving manoeuvre can thus be avoided. The function is only available in the “Rock” drive programme and when LOW RANGE off-road gear is engaged at speeds of up to approx. 25 km/h.

Off-road trips

Off-road crawl.

The intelligent off-road crawl function with three available levels supports off-road driving by maintaining the previously selected speed. It is always active when the LOW RANGE off-road gear is switched on. The three available crawl levels (slow crawl, variable crawl, fast crawl) can be selected using the steering wheel shift paddles.

During slow crawl, the vehicle maintains a speed of 2 to 3 km/h on an incline, on a flat surface and on a downhill gradient.

The same applies to variable crawl, which is supplemented by additional functions: on gradients of more than 10 to 20 per cent, drivers can increase the target speed up to approx. 14 km/h — and reduce it again to walking speed using the brake pedal.

During fast crawl, the vehicle maintains a speed of approx. 8 km/h. And on gradients of more than 10 to 20 per cent, the intelligent off-road crawl function brakes the vehicle by means of recuperation.

Inspired by the emotional V8 sounds of the G-Class, the G-ROAR was developed. In addition to various event sounds, the sound experience includes an emotional driving sound for the new G 580 with EQ Technology.

When driving off-road, the new G 580 with EQ Technology also benefits from the new off-road control centre, which takes the driver directly to the new OFFROAD COCKPIT. It provides an overview of the most important data relevant to off-road driving on both the driver’s display and the media display. Functions to support off-road driving can also be found here. Meanwhile, the “transparent bonnet” provides a virtual view under the front of the vehicle.
